Rodenticides are preparations for the control of rodents (mice, rats), which are a huge problem, especially for agriculture, as well as for owners of private houses and apartments.

They not only destroy stocks and crops, but are also carriers of various dangerous infectious diseases.

Classification of rodenticides

Rodenticides are products designed to protect against rodents, consisting of several groups.

1. For rodents that damage agricultural crops during their cultivation (various types of field mice, yellow-necked, forest).
2. For rodents that damage stocks in warehouses (house mice, gray rats).
3. For sanitary and epidemiological rodents that migrate seasonally (black and gray rats, house rats, red and field mice, gray and Djungarian hamsters, and other species). These include synanthropic species, as well as species that penetrate into residential buildings, medical and preventive institutions, food industry enterprises, and others, and warehouses.

Poison for mice and rats is produced in various forms. It can be in the form of concentrated substances for dilution, or ready-to-use products. These are soft briquettes, various powders, liquids, gels, pastes, foams, and solids (grain, granules, blocks).

Poisoning speed

According to this indicator, all drugs are divided into:

• Acute action. They are distinguished by a very rapid effect on the animal's body, with the manifestation of symptoms in just a few hours. An important condition is the accurate calculation of the dose required to kill rodents;
• Chronic action. They are characterized by a cumulative effect, providing latent, sluggish poisoning. Toxic substances accumulate in the body over a long period of time, but the rodents do not feel its effect on themselves, continuing to eat the bait. As a result, after a few weeks, the animals die from internal hemorrhage (anticoagulants contained in the preparations affect blood clotting).

Method of application

1. Bait. This is a poisoned bait that is placed in places where rodents live. After eating it, the animals die.
2. Non-bait. This type of poison is applied to the surfaces of places where rodents live. The product gets on the fur, the animal licks it off while washing or eating, which leads to its death.

Composition

Based on the components included in the composition, rodent control products are divided into:

• organic;
• inorganic (chemical).

Degree of toxicity

Each drug for the destruction of rats and mice has a different toxicity index, which determines its purpose.

1. Class 1 and class 2 are extremely and highly hazardous products that are intended only for use in industrial conditions, and are prohibited for use in everyday life.
2. Class 3. This group consists of moderately hazardous rodenticides. If you strictly follow the recommendations and precautions, you can use them yourself.
3. Class 4. These are low-hazard drugs. They are allowed for free use at home. Such products are completely ready for use.
