How to get rid of snakes
Snakes are common in many parts of the world. From very large to very small, venomous or non-venomous, snakes are not pleasing to the eyes of the average person. Although most prefer to avoid people, they can react if startled or hurt. Since most reptiles are protected by law, killing them is not recommended.
Reasons why snakes appear on our site
The first and foremost reason is the availability of food and water - reptiles will be in and around your yard if there are small animals there to serve as food. Depending on the type of snake, you may also have a problem with large insects such as cockroaches and grasshoppers, or small mammals such as mice and rats.
First of all, get rid of mice, rats, cockroaches, crickets and voles so that you do not get hissing pests. Pet food and household waste left in the yard overnight can also directly or indirectly attract snakes. Here's the formula: waste attracts rodents, which attract reptiles, and you are responsible for the situation.
Signs of snakes
Besides noticing snakes in person, another sign of snakes in your home is if they have flaky skin, a nest of eggs, or if you notice their droppings.
The loose skin doesn't melt right away, so if you find it, it may mean the snake is still around. You can contact a snake specialist who can identify the type of snake simply by looking at its skin.
As for finding a nest full of snake eggs, remember that they are usually laid in the fall. Do not try to move them without protective equipment because the mother may be nearby, be careful.
Excrement is also a sign of the presence of a reptile. Their droppings are usually mixed with urine and are white in color and resemble bird droppings. They may contain bones, feathers, hair and other indigestible materials left over from feeding. Feces can also contain bacteria that cause salmonella, so be careful if you decide to throw it away. The size and quantity of feces found will help determine the size of the infestation, and places to look for them include basements and attics.
You can find a snake in the garden if there is one.
In the garden, snakes will hide next to the woodshed, stones, pond, in tall grass or bushes. They like places where they can bask in the sun while being protected from vegetation.
Get rid of snakes naturally
Changing the environment in your garden can be quite an effective method of getting rid of uninvited guests. As with other pests, if you deprive them of food and shelter, they will move on to another location. If you see reptiles in your home, it means you are offering them good conditions. To make the environment inhospitable, you must:
- remove tall grass and vegetation
- trim the bushes
- mow your lawn regularly
- Remove piles of rocks, wood and debris from the yard that could provide refuge for reptiles.
- close tunnels and burrows that may attract snakes.
- install a thin wire fence to keep them out
- Protect your pets and birds as snakes feed on chicks and small animals such as rabbits.
- Keep your yard free of food and animal waste, which can attract rodents, which in turn will attract snakes.
- use sharp objects to protect your yard
- use repellents preventively
To get rid of snakes that have already appeared on your property, you can resort to traps to catch the animal, and to prevent them from entering your property, it is best to use repellents. Remember that none of these methods are destruction methods.
Methods of fighting snakes
Snake specialist
You can contact a snake specialist if there is one in your area. Most snakes in your garden are not venomous, so if one ends up in your home, contact a snake specialist who can identify the type of snake, easily lure and capture it, and then release it a good distance from your home.
Repellents for fighting snakes
Repellents cause discomfort primarily in the animals or insects they are directed against, either by mimicking the characteristics of their natural enemies or by simply repelling them.
Snake repellents usually come in liquid, granular or powder form. Their main function is to make your yard as snake-inhospitable as possible. They can be based on natural ingredients (usually enriched and impregnated with camphor oil or aromatic essences) or chemically synthesized (sulfide repellents). They are designed specifically for fighting snakes. Their strong scent repels reptiles. They are most effective if used in the area where you think the snake is.
Repellents are easy to use (especially in liquid form) as they can be easily applied to surfaces, crevices and other places where reptiles hide. They can be scattered near doors and windows, the smell will repel pests. Reptiles will avoid the repellent because it acts as a barrier against them.
Fence the area you want to protect with a 15-20cm wide line of repellent to prevent them from entering your garden. First, leave a small area (about 1 m) uncovered so that snakes already in your garden can leave unhindered; After a week, close this area too.
If there is a pond or swimming pool nearby, do not put any substances in the water, but spread them around it. To prevent reptiles from taking the water, surround it with repellents. Do not use repellents with ammonia or mothballs if you do not want to harm the flora and fauna of the pond. When it rains, they can get into the water and poison fish and plants.
Try to apply your chosen repellent regularly.
Be careful in choosing chemicals because they can easily affect the environment.
Traps with bait
The best way to catch snakes is with traps. Baited traps are easy to set and their relatively small size means they can be placed in tight spaces. They typically contain scented baits and are suitable for use in residential, commercial and industrial buildings, as well as outdoors.
Made from plastic, they are equipped with bait that attracts snakes. Attractant traps lure snakes with a powerful odor from points located in the trap that typically use the scent of mice to lure snakes.
The shape of the trap prevents the reptiles from climbing back out of the trap, but still be careful and cover the opening of the box well until you reach the point where the animal exits. It is best to place the traps near the outside of the wall as snakes usually pass by them, or if you notice a certain place where there are snake tracks, place it there as their nest is somewhere nearby.
Glue traps
Glue traps can also be used as they immobilize the captured snake; these types of traps are considered inhumane because the snakes may injure themselves. Dust and moisture can affect the adhesive used in the trap, so they should not be used outdoors as they will lose their effectiveness.
The traps are easy to use: when the snake comes into contact with a sticky surface, it is caught. To free the snake after you get it to the place where you want to release it, pour vegetable oil on it.
The use of repellers is preferable to glue traps, as it allows you to protect a larger open-air area.
Regardless of which method of repelling and getting rid of reptiles you choose, remember that prevention is very important. If snakes do not have a habitat that provides them with food, they may take up residence in your home. Protect yourself from this possibility by maintaining a well-maintained garden. Prevention is the most effective way to get rid of a potential snake problem. Even if you successfully complete the difficult task of removing a snake from your property, remember that there are ways to prevent it from coming back.
